Hands of Telugu workers behind the Dubai wonder

Burj Dubai, world’s tallest building has eclipsed the reigning champ, Taiwan’s Taipei Towers that dominated the world’s skyline at 1,667 feet since 2004. It is expected to be finished by the end of 2008. Dubai-owned development company Emaar, is only willing to say that the tower’s relentless climb to the sky will stop sometime after it reaches 2,275 feet. Burj Dubai may be thousands of kilometers away, but it is the strong workforce from Andhra Pradesh that is giving the colossal structure its shape and stature. A 30 per cent chunk of the 5,900 workers at the site hail from different parts of Andhra Pradesh, in particular Karimnagar and Nizamabad districts. Nearly 2000 workers from the state are working round the clock in different shifts apart from other workers from Tamil Nadu, Punjab, Rajasthan, Bihar and Kerala, said Mohammed Moizuddin, health and safety manager at Burj Dubai. “It was a challenge to manage them as most of them come from remote villages in Andhra Pradesh and other parts of India. We had to train them on health and safety aspects before they were asked to start their work,” said Moizuddin. When completed, Burj Dubai will be the tallest building in the world in all four categories of spire height, the highest occupied floor, roof height and pinnacle height.
