10 Little Things you can do for the Environment

1. Use a glass when brushing your teeth. Every year, billions of liters of fresh water is wasted by simply not using a glass when brushing your teeth.
2. Don’t use straws. They say the straw is the most stupid invention. They are unnecessary and only add to our waste problem.
3. Say NO to plastics when shopping. Bring your own reusable bags when doing your grocery, or when buying single items like books or cd’s, a plastic bag, or even a paper bag is unnecessary.
4. Turn off the lights. When there is ample daylight or when no one is in the room. You not only save on electricity, you also lower temperature as light gives off heat.
5. Walk. Take the stairs. Or car pool or take public transportation. You not only lower your carbon gas emissions, you are also doing your heart good when you walk regularly.
6. Unplug cell phone chargers after use. As well as all unused electronic appliances. Some appliances use more electricity even when not in use. Microwave oven with timers uses more electricity on stand by mode the entire day than when you cook dinner with it.
7. Use both sides of the paper. And make sure to recycle it after. You not only lessen your wastes but you also help stop the unnecessary cutting of more trees.
8. Turn off shower when soaping. And make sure to avoid long and frequent showers. Showering three times a day not only uses precious fresh water, but also creates more waste water that goes into our rivers and lakes. It dries your skin too.
9. Never burn anything. Burned resources are lost forever. Burning also releases harmful substances into the atmosphere. Reduce and reuse always. Compost and recycle what you can.
10. Tell your friends about this. Spread the word, and together we can make a difference.

SRK, Farah Khan all set to storm the Indian Movie Industry with "Om Shanti Om" - A Cool Musical Retro

The trailers of ‘Om Shanti Om’ have been making the rounds and has grabbed the attention of the nation. Everyone wants to know more about this Shahrukh Khan movie after the huge success of 'Chak De India'. To add to this, the curiosity factor about the next big thing in Bollywood Deepika Padukone is also making heads turn.
Farah Khan’s 'Om Shanti Om' is a tribute to the psychedelic 70s and 80s! Who can forget the 70s and 80s! As the lights went out in the theaters and the credits started to roll, the proceedings used to start with ‘taali maar’ (clapworthy) couplets like, ‘Fanoos ban ke jiski hifazat hawa kare, Who shama kya bujhe jise roshan khuda kare’.The movie says the director Farah will bring back the memories of the 70s and 80s.It is obvious that the movie recreates scenes from a few blockbusters of the 70s and 80s, and Shahrukh imitates a few superstars from the era!
In addition to SRK and Deepika Padukone, a host of other stars will make their appearance in the movie. Watch out for Akshay Kumar, Hrithik Roshan, Abhishek Bachchan, Saif Ali Khan, Salman Khan, Sanjay Dutt, Dharmaendra, Tushar Kapoor, Kajol, Preity Zinta, Rani Mukherji, Urmila Matondkar, Shilpa Shetty, Juhi Chawla, Shabana Azmi and Karisma Kapoor in 'Om Shanti Om'!
'Om Shanti Om' is directed by Farah Khan. The film is produced by Shahrukh Khan's production banner Red Chillies Entertainment and the film stars Shahrukh Khan, Deepika Padukone and Shreyas Talpade in lead roles.

Fancy living it up? How about at 2,000 ft?

FANCY living it up? As in at around 2,000 feet high, where you can look down on helicopters and see the earth curving? Well, for about $40 million, you can, right at the top. The world’s tallest residential building project is unusual in more ways than one. The building, which will the be tallest in the western hemisphere and second tallest in the world, is unlike most other such structures, which are a mix of residential and commercial, purely residential. It’s being developed by an Irish entrepreneur, designed by iconic Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava, and is hoping to sell its 1,193 units to buyers across the world, including in India. And it’s an icon for Chicagoans, where architecture ranks as a local obsession. Chicago natives are as proud of their skyline as they are about their famed friendliness, eating out, and shopping. The Chicago Spire will tower to 150 storeys, almost twice the height of the Sears Towers, way higher than the new Freedom Towers or the CN Tower in Ontario, Canada, currently the highest. Definitely higher than it’s neighbour and rival, the Trump Towers. Ask Garrett Kelleher, chairman of the Dublin-based Shelbourne Developers why he’s not aiming for the world record, which the still-rising Burj Dubai is determined to achieve, and he says it isn’t about ego, it’s about a marketable commercial project. “Don’t you think it’s tall enough? A lot of people have told me to put an antenna on top, but I don’t want to do that,” he told ET. As it is, the building will notch up quite a few world records — the longest elevator run at 1,864 feet, deepest underground parking — and so on. The building’s corkscrew design, where every floor turns at 2.4 degrees to the pinnacle, is inspired by nature like Calatrava’s other works. If it’s not to be just an architectural marvel, but a commercially viable project, we come to the bill while there are no official figures, one estimate puts the cost of the building at $1.5 billion. Ranging from about 500 to 10,000 square feet, the cost of the apartments will be from $7,50,000 to $40 million.

Weight Loss Food

Citrus fruits like, oranges and limes contain high concentrations of Vitamin C (ascorbic acid). This Vitamin C has a fat burning quality. Vitamin C reduces the effectiveness of fat. It reduces its content and can liquefy or dilute fat. By diluting the fat, it makes it less effective, and easier to flush out of your system. Vitamin C also works on cholesterol deposits. By adding Citrus Fruits to your daily diet, you will greatly increase your metabolism, increase your ability to get rid of fat, and also control your cholesterol levels.

Add applesauce (it's loaded with pectin), apples, fresh fruit and berries, to your diet and let the power of pectin pulverize the fat that accumulates on your cells. An apple a day can help keep the fat away.

Cucumbers are usually used in many salads, besides tasting great their high water content adds to your bulk hence making you feel full. They can be consumed before every meal which will greatly help you from over-eating.

Berries contain a chemical call pectin. Pectin limits the amount of fat your cells can absorb. This will put a natural limitation on the amount of fat your cells can absorb. Pectin, once in your system, has a water binding property, it absorbs watery substances, and these watery substances in turn bombards the cells and makes it release fat deposits.

Garlic oil or the juice of garlic has a significant protective quality to cells which help to reduce fatty deposits. When taken, it brings down the levels of fat. Garlic, garlic oil, or anything with garlic, also has an antibiotic property to it and can be used to cure many ailments.

Breakfast cereals are typically heavily processed foods, and most of their original micronutrients, like vitamins or minerals, are removed during the food-processing. However, most breakfast cereals are fortified with added vitamins and minerals, making them a convenient source of most B-vitamins, vitamin D and several minerals including iron. Wholegrain breakfast cereals (eg. granola, muesli, oats) are typically rich in natural B-vitamins, soluble fiber (which helps to lower cholesterol) and have a lower GI-value than regular refined cereals.

‘Happy Days’ Review: A Nostalgic Retreat

Film: Happy Days
Rating: 3.75/5
Cast: Varun, Nikhil, Rahul, Vamshi, Tamanna, Gayatri Rao, Sonia, Monali, Kamalini etc
Dance: Swarna, Noble, Prem Rakshit
Camera: C Vijaya Kumar
Lyrics: Vanamali, Veturi, Venkatesh Patwari
Music: Mickie J Mayor
Direction-Production-Screenplay-Dialogue: Sekhar Kammula
Release Date: 28th September 2007 (USA) , 2nd October (India)
It’s like watching a college campus video. It’s the pleasant story of boys and girls studying in a college. Sekhar Kammula once again touches the receptive channels of the audiences pleasantly.
Story:Four boys Chandu (Varun) , Rajesh (Nikhil), Tyson (Rahul) and Shankar (Vamshi Krishna) and four girls Madhu, Appu, Sravanthi and Sangeetha are the new admissions in an engineering college, CBIT to specify. The entire story is how the relations develop among these bys and girls in the four years of their studies. The love, hatred, happy days and sorrow moments and all fall on the silver screen till the grand finale. That’s only for watching but cannot be read.
Performances: The performances of all young boys and girls are impressive. The main heroine Tamanna is fresh and fair. Her body language resembles Sada to some extent. Gayatri Rao also did a fair job as Appu. Sonia, who played Sravanthi is hot and ‘intersting’. Monali Choudary who played Sangeetha is sufficient.

Coming to guys, Rahul did a lot and his diction is typical. Nikhil and Chandu are appropriate to their roles. Vamshi did his best.
Kamalini Mukherjee appears in the role of a glamorous English teacher and that’s just for a pleasant break.
The entire credit in giving characterizations for all these artistes goes to Sekhar Kammula. He is the man behind carving this long story of four pairs. Screenplay matters very big in such films and the responsibility falls immense in making audiences sit to the seats till the end.
Two songs Arare… and Paadametu Paduthunnaaa… are very interesting. Lyrics by Veturi, Vanamali and Venkatesh Patwari are good. Micki J Mayor’s music has a separate mark for itself.
The film is good on a whole but it pleases only the audiences who are aware of campus education. It is not a right dish for typical mass audiences anyway. It appeals for multiplex audiences, educated crowds and above all for US-Andhrites.
Analysis:Don’t miss the film for the amount of nostalgia it has. One can go back to his lovely college days. And for students it’s a lively celluloid story where they can see themselves on screen. All the feelings from college humor to romance to sentiment…everything can be seen in the flow of 2 and half pleasant hours. The film proved to be an entertainer by the stuff in it. But if you expect some non stop humor and rib tickling scenes, that’s not there. It’s a neat film made in Kammula’s style. The artistes are new but they have excelled in their roles. The film is worth watch by all sets of audience.

Fist half of the film goes with introduction of characters. Second half appears to be little dragged but that’s what happens when four love stories are to be concluded. The scenes sometimes are routine in second half and seldom has the tempo graph suffered ups and downs.

Sekhar got every thing right with Happy Days

Telugu industry is blessed to have directors like Sekhar Kammula who is humble and honest. In a recent interview, Sekhar admitted openly that Godavari is a budget failure. When did we hear any thing like that from a director? When did we hear last that a Director refused to take any fee for a movie because the movie went over the budget?

Sekhar's movies are about how small things in life bring immense happiness.
Sekhar got Swarna Kamal Award in best debut director category for "Dollar Dreams"(1999). His "Anand" (2004) was a commercial success. Anand brought him 7 Nandi Awards including best director, best film and best actress etc. He sold Anand at low prices before it became a hit. Anand distributors made merry and are one of the happiest bunch till date. Godavari did well in A centers and extremely well in USA .
Though Anand has created a trend and Godavari earned good appreciation, Sekhar finally got every thing right with Happy Days. Here is how he got it right.

Happy Days:
  • Made in just 9 months ( Jan 2007 to September 2007)
  • Talent search through Radio Big FM and websites
  • All new cast - minimal fee
  • Corporate tie-ups from Day one- Pantaloons, BIG FM and BIG Music.
  • Planned and executed well with a tight budget of 3 crores.

  • Audio is declared as a melodious hit.
  • First time a telugu movie is releasing in USA 4 days before India and thats shows sekhar's tremondous confidence about his product .
  • It has created a big hype in USA for his film and people are waiting to watch happy days

There is a saying, ‘Good things happen to good people’. He is a successful producer/director before Happy Days release. Who else deserves this better than Sekhar Kammula!!

We wish him and Happy Days the best. May good cinema prevail!!

Excessive Mobile Phone Use Makes You Mad

Now the scientists have discovered that cell phone damages the cells in brain and makes the person suffer from the brain related ailments ranging from small time memory loss to fatal Alzheimer's. To prove this they have shown the result practically.

Two cell phones are placed in opposite direction. They were connected to different tape recorders and left for sometime. The sounds recorded on tape are now emitting out from the cell phones. An egg was placed between the two. After 65 minutes to the surprise of all the egg was fried and started emitting little smoke. This is an illustration for Radio Activity and Radio emitted by cell phones. Scientists say that brain cells damage easily with cell phone usage. They say, "First it affects on emotional channels of brain. Person becomes blunt to emotions slowly and he or she will not find any sexual arousal eventually by speaking for longer hours on cell phone. Slowly the damage increases and it may even lead to madness".
Here are a few remedies to overcome this:
"Never put the cell phone near your ears if you are going to speak for more than 2 minutes. Use ear phones. Even then restrict your talk to 6-7 minutes", says a scientist.

The driver-less car that'll take on traffic!!!

The team of Stanford University engineers that won $2 million in a Pentagon sponsored robot car contest in 2005 unveiled its next-generation vehicle that will maneuver in traffic without a human driver. The computer-packed Volkswagen Passat station wagon will compete this fall in a 60-mile timed race that is intended to challenge a robot vehicle?s ability, not only to follow a course and perform simulated military missions but to do it in urban traffic.

American Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, has invited 53 teams to participate in the event, to be called Urban Challenge. The test was on an artificial course about the size of a small city block, and included a simulation of a four-way intersection.

The robot car, which the Stanford team calls Junior, was limited to a speed of no more than 15 miles an hour by agency officials. It was required to pass four tests, including stopping at an intersection and waiting for other vehicles before proceeding. After completing all of the required tests, the vehicle, which bristled with eight laser range finders, was able to ace the failed test of passing a stationary car immediately after an intersection.

Some Bizzare Facts

Marriage is a three ring circus: engagement ring, wedding ring, suffering.

There are two times a man doesn’t understand a woman, before marriage and after marriage!

A woman worries about the future until she gets a husband. A man never worries about his future until he gets a wife!

When a man opens the door of his car for his wife, you can be sure of one thing: either the car is new or the wife.

When a newly married couple smiles, everyone knows why. When a ten-year married couple smiles, everyone wonders why.

Before marriage, a man yearns for the woman he loves. After marriage, the "y" becomes silent.

What is the difference between a marriage and a war?
A marriage is a war in which the enemies can sleep together!

I asked my wife, "Where do you want to go for our anniversary?" She said, "Somewhere I have never been!" I told her, "How about the kitchen?"

To be happy with a man, you must understand him a lot and love him a little. To be happy with a woman, you must love her a lot and not try to understand her at all !

A woman marries a man expecting he will change, but he doesn’t. A man marries a woman expecting that she won't change and she does.

Going Banana's

A professor at CCNY for a physiological psych class told his class about the bananas.

He said the expression 'going bananas' is from the effects of bananas on the brain. Read on:

Never, keep your banana in the refrigerator!!!

This is interesting. After reading this, you'll never look at a banana in the same way again.
Bananas contain three natural sugars - sucrose, fructose and glucose combined with fiber. A banana gives an instant, sustained and substantial boost of energy.
Research has proven that just two bananas provide enough energy for a strenuous 90-minute workout. No wonder the banana is the number one fruit with the world's leading
athletes.

But energy isn't the only way a banana can help us keep fit. It can also help overcome or prevent a substantial number of illnesses and conditions, making it a must to add to our daily diet.

Depression: According to a recent survey undertaken by MIND amongst people suffering from depression, many felt much better after eating a banana. This is because bananas contain tryptophan, a type of protein that the body converts into serotonin, known to make you relax, improve your mood and generally make you feel happier.

PMS: Forget the pills - eat a banana. The vitamin B6 it affect your mood.

Anemia: High in iron, bananas can stimulate the production of hemoglobin in the blood and so helps in cases of anemia.

Blood Pressure: This unique tropical fruit is extremely high in potassium yet low in salt, making it perfect to beat blood pressure. So much so, the US Food and Drug Administration has just allowed the banana industry to make official claims for the fruit's ability to reduce the risk of blood pressure and stroke.

Brain Power: 200 students at a Twickenham (Middlesex) school were helped through their exams this year by eating bananas at breakfast, break, and lunch in a bid to boost their brain power. Research has shown that the potassium-packed fruit can assist earning by making pupils more alert.

Constipation: High in fiber, including bananas in the diet can help restore normal bowel action, helping to overcome the problem without resorting to laxatives.

Hangovers: One of the quickest ways of curing a hangover is to make a banana ilkshake, sweetened with honey. The banana calms the stomach and, with the help of the honey, builds up depleted blood sugar levels, while the milk soothes and re-hydrates your system.

Heartburn: Bananas have a natural antacid effect in the body, so if you suffer from heartburn, try eating a banana for soothing relief.

Morning Sickness: Snacking on bananas between meals helps to keep blood sugar levels up and avoid morning sickness.

Mosquito bites: Before reaching for the insect bite cream, try rubbing the affected area with the inside of a banana skin. Many people find it amazingly successful at reducing swelling and irritation.

Nerves: Bananas are high in B vitamins that help calm the nervous system.

Overweight and at work? Studies at the Institute of Psychology in Austria found pressure at work leads to gorging on comfort food like chocolate and crisps. Looking at 5,000 hospital patients, researchers found the most obese were more likely to be in high-pressure jobs. The report concluded that, to avoid panic-induced food cravings, we need to control our blood sugar levels by snacking on high carbohydrate foods every two hours to keep levels steady.

Ulcers: The banana is used as the dietary food against intestinal disorders because of its soft texture and smoothness. It is the only raw fruit that can be eaten without distress in over-chronicler cases. It also neutralizes over-acidity and reduces irritation by coating the lining of the stomach.

Temperature control: Many other cultures see bananas as a 'cooling' fruit that can lower both the physical and emotional temperature of expectant mothers. In Thailand, for example, pregnant women eat bananas to ensure their baby is born with a cool temperature.

Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD): Bananas can help SAD sufferers because they contain the natural mood enhancer tryptophan.

Smoking &Tobacco Use: Bananas can also help people trying to give up smoking. The B6, B12 they contain, as well as the potassium and magnesium found in them, help the body recover from the effects of nicotine withdrawal.

Stress: Potassium is a vital mineral, which helps normalize the heartbeat, sends oxygen to the brain and regulates your body's water balance. When we are stressed, our metabolic rate rises, thereby reducing our potassium levels. These can be re balanced with the help of a high-potassium banana snack.

Strokes: According to research in The New England Journal of Medicine, eating bananas as part of a regular diet can cut the risk of death by strokes by as much as 40%!

Warts: Those keen on natural alternatives swear that if you want to kill off a wart, take a piece of banana skin and place it on the wart, with the yellow side out. Carefully hold the skin in place with a plaster or surgical tape!

So, a banana really is a natural remedy for many ills When you compare it to an apple, it has four times the protein, twice the carbohydrate, three times the phosphorus, five times the vitamin A and iron, and twice the other vitamins and minerals. It is also rich in potassium and is one of the best value foods around So maybe its time to change that well-known phrase so that we say, 'A banana a day keeps the doctor away!'

PS: Bananas must be the reason monkeys are so happy all the time!

I will add one here; want a quick shine on our shoes?? Take the INSIDE of the banana skin, and rub directly on the shoe...polish with dry cloth. Amazing fruit

EAT A BANANA BEFORE A MEAL, NOT AFTER

Ganesh in hostels

No matter what some cynics say, Ganesh Chaturthi in the city is truly a festival for all. Take a look at private hostels and paying guest units where people from outside Hyderabad stay, they aren't far behind in adding to the festivities. A private women's hostel in Paigah Colony is typical of what happens here. Apart from putting up a huge Ganesh idol under their portico, the hostel inmates religiously offer prayers early morning and hold an ‘aarthi’ in the evening. Belying the notion that GenNext is obsessed with gizmos and partying, these young professionals wake up before dawn and offer prayers with dhoop and flowers. Needless to say, their innovative ‘ghanti’ comprising a heavy plate and ladles creates enough din to wake the entire neighbourhood, but then nobody dares complain.

IT’S FINAL. INDIA VS PAK

It’s the final we dreamt about in our wildest fantasies. And as the events that made it possible unfolded, life stopped in India. A flight to London was due to take off at 1 am. The passengers begged and pleaded, and finally the flight took off only after the India-Australia semi-final had wound to its glorious, exhilarating close. Two young, fearless teams, playing with infectious enthusiasm and an innocent joy that’s been a sheer delight to watch, will face off in the Twenty20 World Cup final. Pakistan have lost just one match in the tournament. But they now face the only team that’s beaten them—Dhoni’s daredevils, minus the big guns, but more than making up for their absence with the energy of youth and a steely resolve to back themselves against anybody. India are through to the final after holding their nerve to upset Australia by 15 runs. And remember, they have never yet lost a match to Pakistan in any World Cup—T20 or ODI. Once again, man of the match Yuvraj Singh played a pivotal role, scoring the second-fastest 50 in T20 (20 balls), on the heels of his fastest 50 in any form of the game. He took 70 off 30 balls, Robin Uthappa chipped in with 34 and skipper M S Dhoni hit a quickfire 36 off 18 balls, including two massive sixes, as India recovered to 188/5. Every time the Aussie batsmen looked like they had the match under control, India grabbed a wicket to pull it back. Sree Santh had an outstanding day, grabbing 2 wickets and giving just 12 runs in his four overs. Harbhajan turned in another great performance. The other bowlers too lifted their levels as the match went into the nervewracking endgame, and incredibly, it were the Aussies who folded under pressure, managing only 173 for 7 in the end. “I’ve told the boys to just enjoy themselves, and hopefully we’ll win many more games than we lose,’’ a delighted Dhoni said later. Sure, but for now, even one win— in the next match India play—will do just fine.

India set a final date with Pak

India stunned favourites Australia by 15 runs on Saturday to set up a mouth-watering final against Pakistan in the Twenty20 world championships.Yuvraj Singh smashed 70 off 30 balls as India, electing to take first strike at the jam-packed Kingsmead, made a challenging 188-5 and then restricted Australia to 173-7 in a rousing semi-final.Australia, needing 27 off the last 12 balls, were kept down to five runs in the 19th over bowled by left-arm seamer Rudra Pratap Singh and six runs in Joginder Sharma's last over.Sharma, who was hammered for 31 runs in his first two overs, was gambled for the final over by Indian captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni and came good with two wickets at the end.

In Case of Emergency(ICE)...

We all carry our mobile phones with hundreds of names/numbers stored in its memory but yet nobody, other than ourselves, know which of these numbers belong to our near and dear ones?

In case we are involved in an accident or had a heart attack and the people attending us get hold of our mobile phone but don't know which number to call to inform our family members. Yes, there are many numbers stored but which one is the contact person in case of an emergency?

For this reason, we must have one or more telephone numbers stored under the name ICE ( In case of Emergency) in our mobile phones.

Recently, the concept of "ICE" is catching up quickly. It is simple, and important method of contact during emergency situations.

As cell phones are carried by a majority of the population, just store the number of a contact person or person who should be contacted at during emergency as ICE" (meaning In Case of Emergency).

The idea was thought up by a paramedic who found that when they went to the scenes of accidents, there were always mobile phones with patients, but they didn't know which number to call.

He therefore thought that it would be a good idea if there was a nationally recognized name for this purpose.

Following a disaster in London, the East Anglican Ambulance Service has launched a national "In case of Emergency (ICE)" campaign.

In an emergency situation, Emergency Service personnel and hospital staff would then be able to quickly contact your next of kin, by simply dialing the number stored as "ICE".

Please spread this message around. It really could save your life, or put a loved one's mind at rest.

For more than one contact name simply enter ICE1, ICE2 and ICE3 etc.

A great idea that will make a difference!

Let's spread the concept of ICE by storing an ICE number in our mobile phones today! Please inform all your nearest and dearest.

Sunte Hain Ki Mil Jaati Hai Har Cheez Dua Se
Ik roz tumhein maang ke dekhenge Khuda se

Tum saamne hote ho to hai kaif ki baarish
Vo din bhi the jab aag barasti thi ghata se

Ai dil tu unhein dekh ke kuch aise tadapana
Aa jaaye hansi un ko jo baithe hain khafa se

Duniya bhi mili hai gam-e-duniya bhi mila hai
Vo kyon nahi milta jise maanga tha Khuda se

THE GSM WAVE

ABOUT 20 years back, 15 phone companies signed an agreement to build mobile networks based on Global System for Mobile (GSM) technology. Telecom experts then had no idea as to what this might become. Today there are over 2.5 billion GSM mobile accounts worldwide. It took 12 years for the first billion mobile connections to be made but only 30 months for the figure to reach two billion. According to the GSM Association, UK has more GSM connections than people. China has 445 million GSM customers. India has over 100 million. About 64% of mobile users are in emerging markets and about seven billion text messages are sent every day on GSM phones. This is a great start for any technology. And the future is more astonishing. Experts believe that soon communication technology will be woven in clothes we wear, in shoes, in appliances, in cars etc. Mobile technology will revolutionise healthcare and see people wearing monitors that gather and transmit information about vital signs. That's in addition to things like banking and TV viewing, which have already started on handhelds, in some parts of the world. Another new wave has just started.

Red-hot rupee scales 39.85 against dollar

VERY soon, Mumbai’s bookies will be betting on the rupee. How far can it go? A spiralling currency has already baffled CFOs, forced small exporters to hedge the currency risk for the first time, and driven software biggies to sell analysts the story of how they have covered their books. The paranoia will only rise in the weeks to come. A day after Ben Bernanke threw a long rope to the stock market, the rupee breached the psychological mark of 40 to touch 39.85 against the dollar — a nine-year high. On Thursday, it closed at 39.89, after opening at 40.18 level. The rupee and interest rate benchmarks are already hot bets in the over-the-counter derivatives market in several countries. In the non-deliverable forward market, international investors were even more bullish on the rupee. Such trades are expected to grow in the coming months. Though volumes are yet to pick up, rupee futures are already trading on the Dubai exchange. The trouble isn’t over. Bankers and treasury managers expect the rupee to rise to 39.50 levels in the near term, and 38.50 by December 2007 — a level last seen in the late 90s. In all likelihood, the government, which is already in election mode, will feel the pressure to extend more fiscal sops to exporters. At present, euro and rupee billing by exporters are a fond hope, since very few Indian exporters have the clout and bargaining power to convince overseas buyers to accept a currency they may not be comfortable with. A weak dollar seems to be a globally-pervasive phenomenon. For instance, on Thursday, the Canadian dollar was trading on par with the US dollar — an exchange rate that was last seen in 1976.

WHEELING INDIA

Foreign marques cannot afford to ignore the importance of the Indian luxury car market...

The talk in Indian power circles these days is about the length of the all-important visiting card. Especially when the card is made of metal, loaded with the right gizmos and runs on four wheels. Nowadays stepping out of a premium set of wheels is being considered one of the finest ways to announce your arrival in life. And people are fast realising that snapping one up, straight from the showroom floor is the smartest addition to their glamour wardrobe. Last year, in India according to a study by Merrill Lynch and Capgemini, the number of wealthy individuals grew at the second fastest pace in the world in 2006. The country now boasts of 36 billionaires, the highest in any Asian country, worth $191 billion, according to Forbes’ annual list of the world’s wealthiest people. Fourteen Indians were new to Forbes’ list this year. Also, according to industry estimates, last year of the total estimated car sales of 14 lakh, premium cars contributed a miniscule 0.25%. But this year, the figure is expected to go up from 3,500 to 5,000 and, by 2012, sales may touch a whopping 10,000. Sniffing the opportunity, premium carmakers such as, BMW, DaimlerChrysler and Volvo, are busy getting their act together. For instance, BMW this spring opened an assembly plant in southern India to cater specifically to domestic customers. The plant will roll out about 1,700 cars a year priced from Rs 2.67 million ($62,000) to Rs 4.2 million, or at least 12 times the local price of entry-level compact cars. BMW sold 257 cars in India last year but growth expectations are so high that it’s new plant could expand to eventually roll out 10,000 cars a year. Even Volvo aims to be a serious player in India’s luxury car market, which it expects to more than double by 2009. It launched it’s S80 sedan and XC90 sport utility in petrol and diesel variants, at Rs 3.8-5.2 million ($93,137-$127,451), and expects a network of about a dozen dealers by end of next year. In short, foreign marques have finally realised that the premium car market in India is one they cannot afford to ignore. Recently Volkswagen launched their Passat, the Mercedes stable is almost splitting at the seams, and Lamborghini is picking up speed, slowly but surely: the market seems to be slowly blossoming. Therefore it’s hardly a surprise that hard on the heels of Audi’s Q7 launch last September, a slew of top-notch cars and SUVs are lining up for an extended debutantes’ ball, from BMW’s X5 to the legendary Mini. And just to top it up, the party seems to have just begun. A talk with the Stuttgart-based sports carmaker Porsche confirmed the fact they too aren’t yet satisfied with their glam portfolio here. 2009 will see them driving in their sensual Panamera, a four-door luxury sports sedan, which will be priced at around Rs 70 lakh. And not to be left behind in the luxury drag Bentley too is doing the same. With talks of opening another showroom in Mumbai, the niche European carmaker will soon bring in it’s Rs 4 crore Brooklands coupe. India will have two of the 550 cars that Bentley will manufacture globally. If exclusivity is the desire, what better way to satisfy it, eh?
